baking soda and vinegar experiment

                                                Baking soda and vinegar experiment

Question - What I want to find out
We are trying to find out what happens when baking soda and vinegar combine
We are trying to find out if there will be a chemical reaction
Materials
  •  vinegar
  •  Baking soda
  •  Bottle
  •  Cork
Hypothesis - What I think will happen
I predict that it will bubble up alot and finally explode
Method - How I did the experiment
  1. First, I added the baking soda to the bottle using a funnel
  2. Second, I added some vinegar to the bottle
  3. Then, I quickly removed the funnel
  4. Next, added the cork to the top
  5. Finally, then waited
Observations - What actually happened (be really detailed - smell, colour, gases, heat, sound, movement)
At first the vinegar was still flowing down to the bottom
When the vinegar was mixed with the baking soda it turned bubbly and some bubbles started to pop as more came along, whilst it bubbled it started to rise it rose very high until...
There was a Bang and a Pop it pushed off the lid and sprayed out.
Conclusion - Explain what happened and why (you should research and read trustworthy websites before writing this part)

When the two mixtures combine together the molecules from each material mixed as well which caused a chemical reaction. The first reaction Is when the vinegar first meets the baking soda and what happened was the hydrogen ions from the vinegar react to the sodium and other ions in the baking soda it becomes carbonic acid (carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid when dissolved in water) carbonic acid is a gas a very strong gas that can extinguishes fires. This gas builds up inside the bottle and gets stronger and once all the gas has reached the top it explodes which would be the second chemical reaction in this experiment.
Variables: What if…? (Think about what you could do differently if you tried this experiment again (changing an ingredient, changing when or where your experiment takes place, etc).
What if I added more vinegar?
What if I added less baking soda?
What if I used cocoa instead of baking soda?
What if I used lemonade instead of vinegar?
