Explanation - The Atmosphere

 The Atmosphere

Introduction

Earth has lots of different parts and systems to help it function. There are four particular parts that we could certainly not live without; these are Earth's spheres. These four spheres are called the Biosphere, Geosphere, Atmosphere and Hydrosphere. In my explanation, I will be informing you about the Atmosphere.

What is the atmosphere?

This question is commonly asked when someone has first heard of earth and its spheres. Well, the atmosphere is a layer of thin gases which surrounds the earth, it seals the planet and protects us from the vacuum of space. In other words, the atmosphere is a blanket of gases. A blanket of gases means the atmosphere is a bunch of harmful and non - harmful gases that protect us from the hazardous but amazing space.

Are the different layers in the atmosphere?

What are they called? What do they do?

Yes, the Atmosphere has layers. The six different layers are known as the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Ionosphere and Exosphere. The Ionosphere is not a part of the other five main layers. The order of the five main layers go, Exosphere, Thermosphere, Mesosphere, Stratosphere and Troposphere; Troposphere being the lowest layer and exosphere being the highest layer.

Troposphere

The Troposphere is the layer closest to Earth's surface. This particular layer includes the air we breathe and the clouds. It is also the layer where planes would fly. The Troposphere holds three-quarters of the mass of the entire atmosphere. This is the biggest layer.

Stratosphere:

The stratosphere carries the EXTREMELY important ozone layer. The ozone layer protects us from ultraviolet radiation that comes from the sun. Actually, the ozone layer absorbs the UV rays. Without this layer, we life wouldn't be possible.

Mesosphere:

The Mesosphere is the third closest layer to earth. The mesosphere burns up all the asteroids and meteors before they enter the earth. This layer is approximately 35 kilometres thick ( 22 miles) and is about 50 to 85 kilometres wide ( 31 - 53 miles). The mesosphere is by far the coldest layer of the atmosphere, dropping to as low as -173 degrees celsius ( 100 k)

Thermosphere:

The Thermosphere is the hottest layer of the atmosphere, reaching temperatures as high as 1727 degrees celsius ( 2000 k). The atmosphere has an extension that begins between 80km and 120km from the earth. Just like the stratosphere, the thermosphere soaks up the UV radiation and x-ray given by the sun. It also gives us a complete exploration of space.

Exosphere:

The exosphere is the furthest away from earth and the last layer I will be explaining today. This layer is the very first protection layer we have; before all the other layers catch the rest that the exosphere can’t. Exosphere helps atoms to escape from the atmosphere and into space. Unlike the other atmospheric layers; exosphere is the only sphere with a definite shape. The Exosphere contains the lightest gases such as hydrogen and helium

Conclusion:

Overall you can see that the atmosphere is exceptionally important. If the atmosphere didn’t exist we the biosphere and all the other spheres wouldn’t live either. The atmosphere protects us from the dangers of space. Make sure you remember how important the atmosphere is.

GLOSSARY

Ultraviolet radiation (UV ray) - Invisible rays that are apart of the energy that comes from the sun

Atoms - the smallest particle of a chemical that can exist ( a molecule)

The volcano - description

The volcano

Grrrr! The fiend has awoken from its dormant days of nothingness. Fiercely the lava comes vomiting out of the volcano, into the air like water coming out of a whale. Loud gloops of orange liquid can be heard as if someone was gagging next to me. Other annoying, scary noises appear as the dragon’s lava becomes crueller. The intense heat rises in the air and becomes very overwhelming. Dark smoke clouds cloak the earth shutting out the light from the stars. Earth’s beast cackles crazily as more lava seeps out.

Strong wafts of smoke burn everyone's nostrils. Humidity crosses the air as gas spreads at an alarming rate. The monster is upset and furious as people aren't caring for earth. “Just care for earth!”. An immense lightning bolt strikes, attacking the air. Static electricity tingles through my body every time lightning appears. Slowly snow droops down the angry mountain and melts away; it looks as if the demon was crying. Sadly the shiny, bright stars fade as cloud devils hide them away. More and more pours out of the villain's mouth. Gradually, the harsh lava calms down. “Have they learnt their lesson?”

description - the race

The race

HISSSS! Whistling noisily, the wind floats in between the trees. Crowds of parents, friends and family howl; they cheer supportively for their child. Like an erupting volcano, mud splatters everywhere covering everyone near. Stomping into the squishy, brown substance is the feet of the runners who leave deep footprints in it. Grass gets wrenched out of the ground, leaving splotches in certain spots in the field. Athletes faces aflame as they charge through. Children launch themselves over the low, narrow, wooden hurdle. The sky grey-ish white with clouds, loom over everyone bringing a chill to the field. Protecting kids from the mud, is old singlets and shorts. The murky spinach coloured building seems lonely behind the bright faced crowd. Shivering supporters cross their arms to keep the warmth in. parents frown in concentration as they stare at the entrance where the runners should appear through soon. The wind becoming more forceful makes it tougher for the competitors to push on. Sprouting up high splashing people in the face, is the gooey brown liquid, now everywhere. Shoes that are vibrant fun colours now cloaked with mud making them look old and gloomy. The lavatories moss coloured roof, sits there ominously, looking desperate for a fix. Some other people on the sideline are weighed down by the layers and layers of clothing they wear to keep them extra cozy and warm. Mud that is lathered up people's legs is now dry and slowly dropping off them, leaving red marks. Cemented in the ground is the footwear of crowd goers who are now stuck in one spot. Joy on athletes' faces tells everyone how much their enjoying themselves. I wish I could be one of them rolling in the mud, smiles from ear to ear.

A narrative about losing a winning lotto ticket - Ellie and the lotto ticket

Title: Ellie and the lotto ticket

Introduction

“Hmm I wonder what we should have for dinner tonight,” Ellie asked herself before she disappeared to the grocery store.’ I’ll just decide when I get there, It can be a surprise dinner for the family ’. Ellie cheerfully skipped over to the village center ready to plan her exciting dinner.

“Ooo I better check my lotto ticket,” Ellie said suddenly remembering that tonight was the big one million. That is a big amount considering they were a third world country. BEEP! Ellie scans the ticket. Will she win?...

Paragraph 1 - she wins

“YASSSSSSSSSSS,” Ellie howled, as she launched in the air. Ellie danced around the people having a party of her own. she had won. The shocked and excited look on Ellie’s face showed how amazed she was. A crowd started to loom over her like trees in a forest. Ellie stared vigorously at the ticket ignoring the people around her. The villagers murmured about her, to each other, but Ellie didn’t care. The whole world around her stopped for a minute and at that moment she thought about how grateful she was. Instead of going back to shopping she dashed home, she desperately needed to tell her family. She weaved between people, slid between houses and ran through the dirt fields and through the twisted forest.

Paragraph - 2 kidnapped

Ellie was almost home, she just had to get through the twisted forest. She rushed, trying to get there as fast as she could. Then suddenly darkness. Ellie awoke in a stone lair her head aching. It was very old and had many different potions splattered all over the place. Where was she? How was she going to get out? Ellie was so scared and sore, she hadn’t realized that her hands were tied to a pole. She was shivering in fear and cold.

“Hello Ellie, ” said a witch appearing from behind the door. Ellie didn’t reply and just stared. The witch was old, her skin wrinkled and grey looking. Her long purple fingernails, sharp as scissors, her hair was broken bristles of a paint brush, her fiendish eyes flames danced inside and her nose long and crooked. In the witches hand, hidden behind her, Ellie spotted her lotto ticket.

“ That's mine,” she said pointing at the ticket.

“ Yes your right, but I’m going to use it to get the strongest potions, make a dangerous concoction and take over the world haha”  cackled the witch.

“ You can’t do that,” announced Ellie, trying to move but couldn’t get out of the strong rope knotted behind her.

“ Well you can’t stop me now,” she whispered, crawling up to Ellie's face like a spider. Was Ellie ever going to get out?

Paragraph 3 - capturing the witch

The witch had left the room, hiding the ticket away. Ellie needed to untie her hands but how. Then something caught Ellie's eye. Matches! But they were quite far away on top of the table. So using her long dangly legs, she stretched as far as she could, only just knocking them off and sliding them in with her feet. She carefully lit one match and bent herself  in half. holding the match in her feet, she put the flame near her hands where the rope was tied in a knot. Sssss! The rope was burning slowly until. SNAP!  Yes Ellie was free but she still had to find that lotto ticket. She snuck into the witches room while the witch was in the bathroom taking a cold shower. Ellie looked through every draw twice, until she bumped into something but it wasn’t visible. She found the handle and pulled it out. Hesitantly  she put her hand in. the only thing in there was her lotto ticket, she pulled it out. The witch came into the room singing her towel balancing on her head. She didn’t see Ellie since she had run out of the room and hid. She made the secret draw visible and screamed. Where was it thought the evil witch? While the witch was looking, Ellie had drawn a fake lotto ticket. She tied it to a rope on the floor and the rope connected to a cage. Ellie hid and waited for the witch to come to look out here. The witch came out. She looked and saw the fake lotto ticket. “Yesssss” she wailed. Then she stopped, where Ellie was. Well she looks like she's gone and left this here so hahaha thought the witch. She grabbed and then CRASH! She was trapped by Ellie. Ellie came out of her hiding spot and waved the real lotto ticket in the witch's face then Ellie ran.

Conclusion

Ellie sprinted out of the witch’s lair and kept running until she could no longer hear the wailing screams of the witch. Then she stopped pulling out her compass. She used the compass, the compass had her whole town on it and always pointed her in the direction of the village in case she got lost. She finally found her way home. As soon as she opened the door she was enveloped in hugs by her kids and her husband.

“ Where have you been, two days have passed since we’ve seen you? We were worried sick” said her husband with a sigh of relief.

“Well” said Ellie then she continued with the rest of her terrific story, which only her kids believed. When Ellie had finished the story her husband was so happy as he had just found out they had won lotto. They celebrated by having a fancy dinner together and  dancing all night. It was spectacular. The family bought a nice home in Paris and also gave some money to the charities back where they used to live in Ethiopia. The family became very wealthy from then on. Both Ellie and her husband had good paying jobs. Ellie always thought about the day she won the lotto, then she imagined what life would’ve been like if they hadn’t.  Now Ellie knows never ever go near the twisted forest again.

Inquiry- the history of money

The History of Money

9000 BC: money was animals like cattle, sheep and camels. grain and vegetables became very important and so did beads or sharks' teeth or animal skins.

1200 BC: The pacific, Indian oceans, china and parts of Africa used cowrie shells.

1000 BC:china was the first country to discover and use metal money, china also made imitations of cowrie using copper and bronze. They also used “tool” money like knives, spades and hoes. The metal tool money soon develop into disc which were the first coin.

500 BC: Lydia made coins out of silver and gold, and stamped the back of it so everyone would know it wasn’t fake. The coins were all different shapes. The use of the precious metal showed it had value

806 AD: due to copper shortages, china developed paper money. Paper money was on and off for 5 centuries but after stopped when inflation went uncontrollable.

What is bartering?

Bartering

Bartering is when you trade goods for other goods, both the objects have to be worth the same amount or close to the same amount. Both people have to agree to the trade before it has been done.

Example:you have a doll of and you want to trade this with another specific doll . You find a person with what you want and you ask them to trade. If they agree they will give you the doll and you’ll give them the other doll, but if they disagree with the trade then you won’t go through with trade and you’ll have to find someone else with what you want.

Narrative- The day my mum swapped me for a handbag

The day my mum swapped me for a handbag

“I hate how parents Are supposed to be adults, yet they act like children and have no care for their kids”. This is an example of my mum, only cares about herself and being the poshest lady in town. I’m Mary Ann and my mum has swapped me for a handbag. Would you like to hear my story?

It was a normal day, I was doing my chores outside. My mum was outside, but only to spy on our next door neighbour (mum's rival) Barbara moneycrabs. She and mum have been enemies since they could walk. Barbara was lounging around by the pool with her new posh Louis Vuitton hand bag.
“OHH!” My mum gasped with surprise.
“What is it mum” I asked lazily expecting her to reply with a new chore for me to do.
“It’s Barbara, she has the new Louis Vuitton handbag” She whispered, shoving her fists downward.
“OH mum, spying on Barbara again you should stop because you keep getting all crazy every time she has something you don’t” I whined, with a shake of my head.
“ Shhhhh peasant I’m thinking” she yelled sharply.
“UGH”I said grumpily and walked away.
“HMM I need to get one” she said excitedly ignoring my advice to stop spying on Betty.
“C’mon hurry up we need to go to the mall” Mum blurted impatiently.

Soon me and mum were in the car on the way to the mall. When we arrived mum leaped out of the car almost leaving me behind. Luckily I got out in time. We rushed straight in to Louis Vuitton, looking at the last new and improved handbag being sold to an old lady.
“NOOOOOOOO!” Mum screamed in fear that Barbara had beat her. In my mind I was dancing and singing ‘mum didn’t get the hand bag, mum didn’t get the hand bag’. Then suddenly mum clutched my arm and started to drag me over to where a nice young lady was sitting devouring tea. I was quite confused with what mum was going to do to the innocent woman , but I think it was to do with her new Louis Vuitton handbag?

“Hi I’m Maree” said mum trying to get the ladies attention.
“Oh hi, I'm Elizabeth, what can I do for you?” Elizabeth asked.
“Well I was wondering if I could trade something for your handbag” Mum said hopefully.
“Well what are you willing to trade, it has to be good this handbag is priceless?” explained Elizabeth.
“Ahh umm well what about my daughter she's very helpful and does a lot of chores” mum said pulling me to her side.
“Uhh Mum” I stammered.
“Well that’s not a bad deal hmmm... okay I agree” said Elizabeth.
“Woo hoo” cheered mum. “No daughter and a new handbag” said mum as she strolled back to the car park. I was extremely unsure about this and couldn’t process this but I couldn’t do anything since mum just quickly shoved me away.

“NOOOOOOO” I screamed and started to sprint. Elizabeth quickly clutched my arm and pulled me back. What was going to happen to me? Was she going to hurt me? What am I going to do? To be continued...

My speech- why everyone should eat less junk food

Why Everyone should eat less junk food

Intro
Mmmmmm chocolate, doughnuts and caramel slices, All these foods are delicious but should we really be eating as much as we are now? I’m here today to tell you why we should eat less junk food. Mahatma Gandhi once said’ It’s health that is the real wealth, not silver and gold.’ This means that it isn’t money or gold, it’s being healthy that’s the real wealth. Here are reasons why people should eat less junk food: you can get overweight, you can develop digestive problems and lastly you won’t get any nutrition. Let's get straight into it!

Paragraph 1 - makes you gain weight

My first main reason is you’ll gain weight. Eating too much junk food causes you to be overweight which can lead to more problems like cancer and some immune issues. Research says that 40% of all cancer diagnoses in the U.S from 2005 and 2014 have been caused by obesity. I can’t believe people do this to their bodies. It's agonising! People who are overweight can get a condition called sleep apnea, which is a disorder that causes you to stop breathing when you're sleeping. Lucky your brain is smart enough to wake you up so you continue breathing, but the loss of sleep can cause more obesity. You can also become really tired and you may not be able to walk. I think junk food is hurting our bodies and shouldn’t be eaten as much. Does this make you rethink about how much junk food you should be eating?

Paragraph 2 - You’ll get digestive problems

Digestive problems are the next most important reason people should be eating less junk food. Well, junk food messes with your digestive system and may cause it to stop working properly. The food that stays inside your stomach when it can’t be processed, leads to bacteria which will stay inside you and can kill you. AHHH this is horrible! One other digestive problem that you can get is chronic constipation. Chronic constipation is when you can‘t get rid of your feces properly and it really really hurts when it does come out. OHHH the pain! Imagine having this happen at school. Do you really want this to happen to you? I can’t believe people don’t mind if this happens.

Paragraph 3 - you won’t get any nutrition

My last main reason is you won’t get nutrition. Without enough nutrition, you can get extremely ill which could result in death. You can experience changes like paler skin and sore joints and bones. If you don’t get any nutrition you can get diseases E.G, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, some cancers and heart disease.  Lack of Nutrition stunts bone growth which means you won’t grow. Things like nails and hair also could stop growing. Your hair may fall out!. Ohhh spooky. I think it's a tragedy. Everyone should make sure they dial down on unhealthy food.

Conclusion
Now remember every time you open your mouth to shove in delicious junk food, that you’ll gain weight, you’ll get digestive problems and lastly, you won’t get enough nutrition. You could be fit and healthy right now if healthy food was the main source in your meals. You can be this amazing person you dream of if you listen to my advice, remember all that I’ve told you and choose healthy food!

Thank you

Recount- Beachlands being chased by gorillas

Being chased by “gorillas”

“Wait what are those”

It was evening and us three nine year olds were ready to go get dinner. Ashley, Caroline and I launched ourselves into the car waiting for Carolines mum Katie to finish locking up the L shaped house. When Katie reached the car a few moments later, we buckled our seatbelts excitedly. We were getting hashbrowns and ice cream for dinner and dessert.

“LOOK OVER THERE!” Caroline exclaimed.
“What,” answered Ashley and I searching around out the window.
“Gorillas,” Caroline said and then we all chuckled wildly. The gorillas were tall figures. They were a light grey but had different features that were a pitch black. We bounced in our seats laughing our heads off. Some of the gorillas had their masks off since it was hot.

The gorillas waved as they noticed us staring and shrieking with laughter. The gorillas began to jog slightly following everywhere the car turned. We twisted our bodies to see the act behind us. The jog gradually changed into a sprint chasing the car. We waved extravagantly, our hands thwacking together. We noticed that they were getting closer and our hearts were beating fast with fear, shock and excitement. They neared even more and their fingers were centimeters away from sliding them down the shiny car. Then suddenly one of them tried to dive onto the car but only it’s arms managed to clutch then soon it lost grip .

Katie, who was looking from the side view mirror, laughed her head off at the gorillas running; she thought they were ridiculous until the jump. After the gorilla tried to jump Katie went quiet for a moment or two. Caroline,Ashley and I  got such a fright, our whole body was stuck to the back of the seat like some put a fan on full and stuck it in our faces. After that fearful moment the gorillas stopped to take a breath and as we kept driving they faded away until they were no longer seen.

We had arrived at the countdown car park and had found a spot.” wait here girls I won’t be long ``Katie said. The look in katies eye telling us don’t sneak out of the car and don’t be silly. After we had lost sight of Katie we took our seatbelts off and started dancing around. I climbed into the front seat thinking I’m the driver. Then I noticed the hefty gorillas strolling past staring in at us. I sunk all the way down in my seat, my cheeks blushing furiously. I was so embarrassed. The gorillas sniggered at me. I turned my face away, looking back at my friends for help but they just laughed. I didn’t turn my face around until my friends signalled me that they were gone. OMG they had to walk past then I thought to myself as my friends continued laughing.

When Katie arrived back at the car we told her and she chuckled as well.

“That’s funny!” Katie said as I groaned. We drove home giggling and dancing. We then talked and processed what just happened. That moment we will remember forever. Hopefully we won’t come face to face with them again. That was a crazy scary moment.

I designed this art work for a tile in the new train station (city rail link)

baking soda and vinegar experiment

                                                Baking soda and vinegar experiment

Question - What I want to find out
We are trying to find out what happens when baking soda and vinegar combine
We are trying to find out if there will be a chemical reaction
Materials
  •  vinegar
  •  Baking soda
  •  Bottle
  •  Cork
Hypothesis - What I think will happen
I predict that it will bubble up alot and finally explode
Method - How I did the experiment
  1. First, I added the baking soda to the bottle using a funnel
  2. Second, I added some vinegar to the bottle
  3. Then, I quickly removed the funnel
  4. Next, added the cork to the top
  5. Finally, then waited
Observations - What actually happened (be really detailed - smell, colour, gases, heat, sound, movement)
At first the vinegar was still flowing down to the bottom
When the vinegar was mixed with the baking soda it turned bubbly and some bubbles started to pop as more came along, whilst it bubbled it started to rise it rose very high until...
There was a Bang and a Pop it pushed off the lid and sprayed out.
Conclusion - Explain what happened and why (you should research and read trustworthy websites before writing this part)

When the two mixtures combine together the molecules from each material mixed as well which caused a chemical reaction. The first reaction Is when the vinegar first meets the baking soda and what happened was the hydrogen ions from the vinegar react to the sodium and other ions in the baking soda it becomes carbonic acid (carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid when dissolved in water) carbonic acid is a gas a very strong gas that can extinguishes fires. This gas builds up inside the bottle and gets stronger and once all the gas has reached the top it explodes which would be the second chemical reaction in this experiment.
Variables: What if…? (Think about what you could do differently if you tried this experiment again (changing an ingredient, changing when or where your experiment takes place, etc).
What if I added more vinegar?
What if I added less baking soda?
What if I used cocoa instead of baking soda?
What if I used lemonade instead of vinegar?
